Mallorca on foot: discovering the largest Balearic island better

Although Mallorca is world famous for its deep blue water and white sandy beaches, today we will show you that the centre of the island is just as fascinating as its coastline.

The centre of the island

It is authentic, quiet, clean and serene. The inhabitants are incredibly friendly and welcoming.

Getting to the countryside is easy

As soon as you leave the city and head towards the centre of the island, you will find yourself surrounded by olive groves, almond orchards, vineyards and charming little villages that have yet to be discovered by tourists. Mallorca's almond blossom is world famous, comparable to the cherry blossom in Japan, and Mallorcan olive oil is among the best in the world.

Apart from the mountain and sea views, the fascinating Mediterranean flora and fauna and the mansions you can visit along the way, what makes Mallorca's inland walks special is the chance to stay in a glamorous hotel such as the Hotel Palladium Palma. It is located in the centre of Palma but with very good transport links so that getting to the rustic part of the island is child's play.

Winemaking

When it comes to winemaking, the only reason I can think of to explain why Mallorca is not world famous for its wines is that hardly any bottles leave the island. Mallorcan reds are full-bodied and rounded wines. The best whites are reminiscent of California, without being too "oaky". The best place to taste them is the area between Benisalem and Biniali.

Mallorcan cuisine - finger-licking good!

When it comes to cuisine, in Mallorca today seafood is the way to go, but, surprisingly for an island, this has not always been the case. In fact, the islanders only developed a real fishing industry in the last 50 years. As well as seafood, they are particularly proud of the way they cook lamb, which is considered the dish that represents the region, along with sobrasada and ensaimada.

On a personal level, I am a great admirer of both the simple, traditional Mallorcan food that can be sampled at lunchtime in one of the many menú del día restaurants along the way, and the new, innovative and glamorous gourmet restaurants that have mushroomed in Mallorca, especially in Palma and the Tramuntana mountain region.

The Mallorcan experience is certainly an eye-opening one.  Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
